Some duties sit just past what a mature frame range can comfortably carry, and rather than distort a good design the sensible answer is one more size. The MC3PLSF08 large-frame industrial gear unit is that answer in the three-stage foot-mounted line: the same three helical meshes in a long, low case, drawn larger in every direction that matters - gear faces, shaft sections, bearing spans and oil volume.
Nothing about the layout is new, and that is the point. A plant that already runs the 05 or the 06 on neighbouring machines can add an 08 without learning a new mounting convention, a new oil grade or a new spares logic. The frame is bigger; the habits that keep it alive are the same habits the maintenance crew already practises.
The extra metal buys three things, and it is worth knowing which one a given duty actually needs. First, torque capacity: wider faces and thicker shafts transmit more at the same stress. Second, thermal headroom: a larger case radiates more heat, so continuous running at part load stays comfortable even in warm buildings. Third, stiffness: a deeper case section deflects less under shock, so teeth see gentler peaks and bearings keep their geometry.
Duties that need only the first item may be served just as well by the frame below at a lower price. The 08 earns its place where two or three of the three coincide - a pond drive that turns all summer in full sun, a cooler grate that takes a shock every revolution, a transfer car that starts and stops a hundred times a shift. When in doubt, price both frames against the real duty rather than the nameplate power.
Before any outline drawing is approved, the order string should be decoded once, at the bench, with the drawing in hand. Each character commits the factory to a physical feature.
| MC | Industrial gear unit of the multi-stage helical family, built for plant duty |
| 3 | Three successive helical reductions, the route to deep ratios without a towering case |
| P | Input and output shafts in one horizontal plane, easy to guard and align |
| L | Extended case length with cast feet and a wide inspection opening |
| S | Solid output shaft carrying a parallel key, made for slow torque-heavy shafts |
| F | Foot mounting onto a prepared horizontal bedplate |
| 08 | Second-largest frame of the three-stage band - more face width, more sump, more stiffness than the 07 |
The two numbers the code cannot carry are the ratio and the orientation. Both change the drawing materially: a deep ratio may require the full three stages plus a wider pinion set, and the position of the motor - left or right of the case, above or below the oil line - decides where the breather, dipstick and drain land. Say both out loud in the enquiry.
The 08 spends most of its working life turning something slowly: a rake sweeping a pond every hour and a half, a conveyor head shaft making one revolution every few seconds, a cooler grate stepping forward once per stroke. At those speeds the gearbox output torque climbs far above anything the motor itself could produce, and every element downstream of the teeth - keys, shrink seats, couplings, foundation bolts - lives at that torque too.
So the quiet rule of slow, heavy drives is to check the whole torque path, not just the gear rating. A key sized by habit, a bolt group torqued from memory, a coupling guard rubbing a hot coupling - none of these show up in the catalogue column, and all of them end careers early. Walk the path once at commissioning with the drawing in hand and the unit will spend its decades quietly.
Vertical duties where the size 90 frame is the ceiling choice:
The pattern across these jobs is steady heavy rotation in places that are awkward to service. A frame chosen with genuine margin turns awkward-to-service into almost-never-serviced, and that difference is worth more than the price gap between adjacent sizes.
Every continuous-drive enquiry should ask one question twice: once in March and once in August. Thermal capacity that looks generous at a twenty-degree ambient can vanish at thirty-five, and the units that disappoint are never the ones sized on paper - they are the ones sized on springtime paper. Give the true worst-case ambient in the enquiry and let the thermal balance be checked at that number.
The 08 gives the designer room to answer: more case surface, a deeper sump, and the option of ancillary cooling if the arithmetic still lands short. None of it costs much when decided before the drawing is cut. All of it costs a shutdown when discovered after the first hot week.
A case this size is a precision component that happens to weigh as much as a car. Set it on a bedplate that has been cleaned and levelled, lower it squarely, and bring the feet down onto shims rather than drawing them down onto an uneven surface - an over-torqued bolt on a proud pad can bend the foot, warp the bearing bores and produce a gear whine that no amount of alignment will cure.
Torque the holding-down bolts to the drawing values in the crosswise sequence, verify the coupling alignment cold, and then read it again after the first warm run, when the case has grown into its working shape. File both sets of readings. On a drive of this size, fifteen minutes of discipline at installation is the cheapest insurance the project will ever buy.
Put these on one page and the selection comes back complete: motor kilowatts, speed and starting method; output speed with the tolerance the process tolerates; absorbed torque at the machine, with any recurring shock described in plain words; running hours per day and starts per hour; the honest worst-case ambient; mounting position and available space around the case; shaft dimensions where an existing coupling or pulley must be kept; overhung load and its lever arm if any; paint, nameplate and documentation wishes.
One complete page in, one fixed quotation out. The plants that run this series smoothly are the ones whose enquiries read like checklists - and the 08 rewards that habit with decades of uneventful rotation.
Take a 37 kW motor at 1485 rpm turning the rake cage at 11 rpm. The ratio follows directly: 1485 / 11 = 135, a ratio at the deep end of the three-stage band, and the frame is confirmed against the stall torque of a rake that can bind where the settled bed compacts. In this case the larger case of the 08 sheds the heat of continuous slow running without any added cooling, which is what a pond that turns all summer asks of its drive. That is the whole calculation. If your duty involves heavy starting, frequent reversing or many stops per hour, tell us and we raise the service factor.

Gears are 20CrMnTi alloy steel, case-carburised to HRC58-62 over a tough HRC33-40 core. Input and output shafts are 42CrMo, quenched and tempered to HRC25-30. The housing is cast iron at HBS190-240.
Backlash is the small free rotation between input and output. We hold it within 20 arcmin - tight enough for indexing tables, positioning drives and reversing applications, without the cost of a precision servo gearbox.
We can supply food-grade lubricant, FKM (Viton) oil seals and stainless fasteners for washdown areas. These units are common in bakeries, dairies and packaging halls where hygiene and moisture are daily concerns.

Four steps from your application data to a firm model number.
An airport baggage-handling integrator uses reducers on check-in conveyors. Thousands of start-stop cycles a day are absorbed without overheating, and the low noise level matters in a public terminal.
A quarry operator fits industrial gear units on its primary jaw crusher feeders. The shock of rock dumped straight from the haul truck is covered by the service factor, and the cast-iron housing shrugs off years of dust and vibration.
